Scotlandville Community Town Center

Scotlandville is an area within the city of Baton Rouge, near the northern city limits. Baton Rouge is known for it’s man-made levee riverfront, while Scotlandville is known for the naturally constructed bluff, Scott’s Bluff. Baton Rouge struggles with flood issues, but Scotlandville’s high elevation protects the area from flooding.

The design for the Scotlandville Plaza intends to empower and strengthen the community, just as the bluff empowers and strengthens the community. The trail North-East of the plaza replicates the meandering trail of the Mississippi River. Bluffs are formed from deposits of sediment pushed to the outside of the meanders. The pathways have elevated  walls containing a raised bed on the outside of the meander to represent the bluff. With this design, Scotlandville honors and celebrates the geography of the community’s home.
